Лаборатория климатологии

Laboratory of Climatology of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded by a Correspondent Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences E.E. Fedorov in 1934. Professor B.L. Dzerdzeevsky, Professor Y.L. Rauner, Professor A.N. Krenke and Dr. A.B. Shmakin were the heads of the laboratory in the past. There are 13 employees at the Laboratory of Climatology, including 2 Doctors in Geography and 9 PhDs. Graduate students are regularly trained at the laboratory.

Fundamental problems of climatology have been investigated at the Laboratory for many years, and several new scientific directions were developed. Our major scientific areas include but not limited to heat balance in different landscapes, complex climatology and bioclimatology, study of atmospheric circulation mechanisms, numerical modeling of climate at different scales, climate history of the last millennium, studies of extreme climatic events.

Researchers of the Laboratory created databases of climatic parameters, geophysical properties of vegetation and soil, historical evidences and indicators of climatic extremes. The original calendar (since 1899) of the daily elementary atmospheric circulation mechanisms in extratropical zone of Northern hemisphere by B.L. Dzerdzeevsky method was also developed at the Laboratory of Climatology.

The new approach of complex climatology is developed by E.E.Fedorov, L.A.Chubukov and A.I.Baranov at the Laboratory in 1930s. Agroclimatic researches were done by P.I.Koloskov; the climatic description of various regions and countries was made by A.I.Baranov, E.E.Fedorov and P.I.Koloskov.

Research of heat and water regime of land surface, its role in dynamics of natural processes (A.I.Budagovsky, A.P.Galtsov, B.L.Dzerdzeevskii, M.I.Lvovich, E.N.Minaeva, J.L.Rauner) is in development since the middle of 1950s. There were extensive field experiments in forests, forest-steppes and arid landscapes within these researches in 1960-1970s, and hydrologo-atmospheric experiments were conducted as well.

Studying of circulation factors of climate and their long-term change was an important part of researches of the Laboratory since the beginning of 1950s (B.L.Dzerdzeevsky, N.N.Galakhov, M.E.Lyahov, B.V.Spiridonov, S.S.Savina, Z.M.Vitvitskaya, V.M.Kurgansky, L.V.Khmelevskaya).

Research of climate and microclimate of USSR regions and other countries have been carried out by B.L.Dzerdzeevsky, A.P.Galtsov, V.M.Zhukov, J.I.Feldman, L.A.Chubukov, G.N.Vitvitsky, N.N.Galakhov and K.V.Kuvshinova in 1950-1970s. Processes of evaporation and soil percolation have been studied by A.I.Budagovsky, genesis of hot dry winds and droughts has been investigated by A.I.Budagovsky, G.N.Vitvitsky, N.N.Galakhov, A.P.Galtsov, influence of climate on human health was analysed by N.A.Danilova.

Numerical modeling of energy and water exchange on land has been started at the Laboratory in the middle of 1980s. Numerical modeling of climate on local, mesoscale and global scales is developed by A.B.Shmakin, D.V.Turkov and A.Y.Mikhailov during the last decades. Researches of climate history of the last millennium and extreme climatic events are made by A.N.Krenke, M.M.Chernavskaya, A.B.Shmakin, V.V.Popova. Studies of regional structure of climate changes in Russia are made by A.B.Shmakin, V.V.Popova. Researches of atmospheric circulation, heat balance and desertification are continuing.
