A concept of climatic desertification is developed, and the essence of the climatic component of modern desertification is investigated in the monography. It is shown that desertification is regulated by changes of large-scale atmospheric circulation under the influence of ocean temperature anomalies. Sensitivity of climate of the arid regions to global warming is investigated. Impact of precipitation frequency of various intensities for the process of desertification is confirmed. Factors of thermoregulation of the land surface are investigated. Their change defines the feedback on desertification. The ratio of climatic and anthropogenic desertification is estimated. Tendencies of climatic desertification are defined.

Results of glaciological researches at the Institute of Geography for the last 1015 years are compiled in the monography. Interaction of snow cover and circulation of atmosphere, existence and degradation factors of permafrost, climatic fluctuations of usual glaciers and sharp motions of pulsing glaciers in the second half of 20th century, processes of glacier runoff formation were studied. Research territory: the former Soviet Union, the western part of the European Arctic regions (namely Spitsbergen) and some areas of the Central Asia.
